A woman in Bogotá, Colombia, was the victim of identity theft. On October 5, she began to receive notifications on her cell phone in which large sums of money were being deposited. She immediately noticed that she did not have an account with Bancolombia, and the one she had, had been closed years ago.
The victim was able to identify that the scammers were receiving consignments for the purchase of the SOAT (Compulsory Traffic Accident Insurance) in Colombia. This supposed SOAT never reached the buyers and they contacted the woman, pointing her out as a thief.
In total, several people had deposited approximately 13 million pesos and the thieves immediately withdrew the money. There was no opportunity for the buyers to recover their investment.
The victim, when she was involved in this big scam, contacted the bank and complained since for her it was unheard of that they could “create an account in her name without the natural requirements of the presence of the person who opened the account”, she explained to La W Radio.
The most worrying thing is that this woman’s case is not the only one. She has found ten similar stories, in which her identity has been supplanted in banking entities.
What do the banks say about this?
Most banks have instructions on how to avoid being a victim of impersonation, but all of them are focused on the user. So far, Bancolombia has not commented on this specific case. It is important to emphasize that banks have the responsibility to protect the identity of users and improve all transactional processes.
Customers need to trust their institutions, but the authorities do not demand the necessary measures to reduce fraud rates.
